The Cooper Center is our community center in Volcano Village, Puna District ... on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a nonprofit, directed by the Cooper Center Council ... with a mission of bringing the community of Volcano, Hawaii and surrounding area into a cohesive group. We direct and/or host many activities and projects. Our community is located in an exotic rainforest, near the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Please join us in continuing to make Volcano, Hawaii a superb place to live!
VOLCANO AWARENESS MONTH ...
January 2012 marks Hawai‘i Island’s 3rd annual Volcano
Awareness Month. As it has for the past two years, the USGS
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), in cooperation with
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and the University of Hawai‘i
at Hilo, will offer a number of public programs to promote the
importance of understanding the volcanoes on which we live.
HVO will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding
in January.
To commemorate this centennial milestone, HVO
will hold an Open House on Saturday, January 21. Residents and
visitors are invited to tour the observatory, which is not ordinarily
open to the public, to see how we monitor Hawai‘i’s volcanoes
and earthquakes. HVO staff will be on hand to answer questions
and to provide demonstrations and activities about their work and
Hawaiian volcanoes. HVO is located next to Jaggar Museum in
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, which is waiving park entrance
fees for the Open House ....
Sincerely,
Linda Ugalde ... for Cooper Center Council
